Q: Will the LiLi work with other products, such as cider or beer?
A: The LiLi and the LiLi-B are designed to pasteurize milk and dairy products. Both may be used for other products, though the suitability of other products will be reviewed on a case by case basis.
Q: What does the coil do?
A: The coil is where the milk is held at the proper pasteurization temperature (161 degrees F) for the required amount of time (15 seconds). It is called a holding, or legal, tube.
Q: Is it a still?
A: Not even close, though we agree that the coil does resemble the coils found on a still.
Q: Is it a continuous flow pasteurizer?
A: Technically it is a High Temperature-Short Time (HTST) pasteurizer. But, it is also called an inline or continuous-flow pasteurizer.
Q: Is the LiLi a legal pasteurizer?
A: Yes, the LiLi Pasteurizer has passed rigorous inspections by the States of Vermont, New York, Colorado, and others. It is in full compliance with all pertinent regulations, including the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance (PMO) and 3-A.
Q: Is it legal to use in Vermont yet?
A: Yes, the LiLi Pasteurizer has been reviewed by the State of Vermont inspector and passed the inspection with flying colors.
Q: Does it have approval by the health department?
A: See our answers to the questions—Is the LiLi a legal pasteurizer? and Is it legal to use in Vermont yet? In short, some states regulate dairy processing facilities via their departments of public health. It all depends upon the individual state and how it regulates dairy processing. Though the LiLi complies with all pertinent regulations, it must be approved for use in the state where it will be installed (just like all dairy processing equipment).
Q: What does the LiLi cost?
A: Please call 802-763-2777 or refer to our website (product listings) for current pricing. The LiLi and LiLi-B are professional, sophisticated, and easy-to-operate machines. Maintenance requirements are surprisingly minimal. Both are excellent and durable investments. Benefits of both include: the ability to pasteurizer on-farm, excellent flavor and nutrient retention, and an on-board automatic Clean in Place (CIP) system. Both models ship assembled and require only one 240V outlet, one 120V outlet and a 2 to 4 GPM water supply.
Q: Is it 3A approved?
A: The LiLi complies with all pertinent regulations including 3-A requirements and, as is the case with all pieces of Grade A Dairy Processing equipment, the state inspector has the final authority to review and approve the LiLi.
Q: What is the difference between the LiLi and the LiLi-B?
A: Price and capacity. The LiLi pasteurizes milk at a rate of 2 gallons per minute and isn't capable of pasteurizing liquids with a higher viscosity than chocolate milk. The LiLi-B pasteurizes milk at a rate of 4 gallons per minute and because the pump pushes the product through the machine, it is capable of pasteurizing fluids as thick as ice cream mix (though at a slower rate).
Q: How does the LiLi compare to a vat pasteurizer?
A: There is really no comparison. Vats pasteurize slowly and tediously with lots of opportunities for varied results as the milk (or other product) is assaulted by heat for hours. Vats must be monitored almost constantly and cleaned by hand. The LiLi is mostly automatic and requires very little monitoring. The temperature of the milk remains consistent during the pasteurization process and and the milk is only exposed to heat for a couple of minutes before it is quickly cooled. Because the milk is exposed to heat for a much shorter time, the flavor and nutritional value of the milk is as close to raw milk as possible. Read our Comparison Guide!
Q: What kind of maintenance does the LiLi require?
A: Very little. The heat exchanger should be inspected at least twice per year to insure complete cleaning. All of the tri-clamp gaskets should also be changed once per year. We strongly suggest that your water source be tested for minerals. Water with excessive mineral levels should be treated to avoid buildup in the onboard water heater.
